We are very excited to report that several weeks ago we were invited to participate in the MANCI TLC Cell Dog Program. After talking with the supervisor of the program, Kurt Dahlby, we were convinced this would be a wonderful opportunity for their facility, our facility and of course, the dogs. All the dogs must be vaccinated, dewormed, flea treated and spayed/neutered before they enter the prison, but that's not a problem for us as this is normal procedure for all of our dogs. In the program the dogs learn basic obedience commands such as heel, sit, down, stay and come. If a certain dog learns more quickly than the others he or she may go on to learn some basic agility too.

Having been inside the prison several times, we can attest to the bonds that form between many of the handlers and their dogs. Many of them get very attached to their dogs and are very protective of them. This is of great benefit to the dogs as they receive plenty of one on one attention fromtheir handlers and attention from the other inmates as well. They are able to go out 4-5 times per day and more often if needed, otherwise they spend their days with their handlers in their cells or training.

In the last few weeks we have transported 10 dogs to the program, including 2 dogs from our 90 dog seizure and one whose leg has just been amputated! Our humane agents have been to visit and check on the dogs several times. We are happy to report that all of them are doing well and three of them have families approved for adoption when they are finished with the program. They won't have to come back to our shelter at all! That is what we want to see.

As many of you know most of our dogs come from cruelty cases. They have either been neglected, abused, abandoned or any combination of the three. Being able to take several of our dogs to the prison not only helps socialize the dogs and teach them to be better pets, but it gives us the space and freedom to pull more dogs from cruelty situations and give them the help they need.

Our shelter, which was built about 50 years ago was meant to house only two dogs, so you can see how this can limit us from pulling all the dogs that we see on a daily basis that need our help desperately. We are extremely happy to be participating in a program that can only benefit our dogs, their handlers and their adoptive families. We will make full use of the opportunity. Please consider adopting a rescue dog. They are forever grateful.
