The Humane Society Of Richland County is an open intake facility. This means that we take any cat brought to our door. We are not contracted by any city or municipality to take stray cats. Our only funding is from public donations, private fundraiser's, and grants when possible.
Only a few years ago we were a limited intake facility accepting cats/kittens on a space available basis. At that time our waiting list was several months long. In analyzing this approach we became aware that this was not working for the public or the animals. Many well-meaning residents take in stray cats as they do not want to see them suffer. These good Samaritans were at a loss when there was no shelter available to house the animals.
All of the no-kill shelters in the area are consistently full and can not accept more animals. We also saw in several very graphic and sobering instances the things that happen to cats and kittens that are dumped due to lack of a better alternative. These poor creatures endured poisoning, being hit by cars, abuse and attacks by dogs and raccoons among other things. These are fates we are determined our area’s feline population will no longer endure.
Now with open intake, we get only a few animals dumped at the shelter per year. Because people bring the animals through our doors, for many, we have their history which aids us in finding the perfect home for them. For others there is no history, but they are contained and safe; not running free and making more kittens, creating a larger problem.
Yes, we euthanize more than before, but we have learned to accept the reality. Knowing what the alternative is for these animals being dumped and left to die or create more cats softens the blow. We prefer to do what we can for as many as possible through adoption at the shelter and Petsmart and by using other methods such as our spay/neuter programs, educational talks and public relations events.
