As a non-profit agency the Humane Society of Richland County is often asked these same questions. So we present them here as a quick reference. As more questions are asked we will continue to update this area.
Q: Are you a registered non-profit organization?
A: Yes, we are a fully registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. A copy of of our 501(c)3 status is available upon request.
Q: Is my donation tax deductible?
A: Yes, your donation is tax deductible. If you have concerns or questions, you may Contact Us for more information prior to making your donation.
Q: Can I donate to the Humane Society in my will?
A: Yes, we are extremely touched when people remember the animals of the world and our organization in particular. Arrangements can be made for the future in advance by speaking to your attorney.
Q: Are there other ways to help besides money?
A: Yes, we always looking for bulk/extra items, foster homes, and volunteers to help at fundraiser’s and shelters. Click Here to visit our downloadable forms page for related documents.
Q: Do you round up stray dogs?
A: No. In Richland County, the Dog Warden is responsible for the collection of stray dogs. You can view their Petfinder page as well as view their contact info, a message from the warden and their hours by Clicking Here.
Q: I found a stray cat / I have a cat I need to surrender, can I bring it to the shelter?
A: We do accept cat surrenders by appointment. We do also require a small surrender fee to help cover the cost of food and litter while the cat is in our care. Please call our shelter at 419-774-4795 to schedule an appointment.
Q: I have a dog I can no longer keep, can I surrender him/her to your shelter?
A: We cannot accept owner surrenders of dogs. The dogs that we have at our shelter have come from abuse/neglect/abandonment cases where the animal is confined to a property. The Dog Warden will accept owner surrenders of dogs from time to time when they have space. If they are unable to accept your dog surrender, we refer people to the Upper Sandusky Humane Society. They will accept any animal, 24 hours a day, everyday. Their number is 419-294-4477.
Q: Is your shelter a “no-kill” shelter?
A: Yes, and no. We maintain ‘no-kill’ with our dogs, unless there is a history of aggressive behavior, signs of aggression towards other animals or people, or there is a medical condition that we cannot correct, and the dog is suffering. With the high number of feral cats, or injured cats that we take in, it is impossible for us to maintain ‘no-kill’ with our cats. If a cat is feral, or wild, and is un-able to be handled safely, or is injured or sick and not responding to the medications we have available to us at the shelter it is humanely euthanized by injection. We very rarely ever have to euthanize for space. We do NOT set any time limits on our cats either. We love all of the animals we have at our shelter, and it is our absolute wish for each and every one of them to find the forever home they deserve.
